Mitt Romney: Welfare Queen
Listen guys, we all do crazy things at
parties secretly taped political fundraisers, right? Like take this major gaffe about entitlements that is rocking the Romney campaign today: the former Massachusetts governor was hitting the Diet Dr. Pepper PRETTY hard at this fundraiser and said some middling things about how 47% of the United States population is so hopelessly dependent on government that they would die without it.
Basically, Romney revealed his belief that poor people are somewhere between Reagan Era Welfare Queen’s and the unconscience citizens living in pods in The Matrix. Here’s what he actually said: “There are 47% of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47% who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it….They will vote for this president no matter what…I’ll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”
Let’s not mince words here: not only was this is wildly offensive, is was also a huge political blunder. No doubt anyone at this event who understands politics lost their top hat and monocle in disgust at how inpolitic Mitt Romney’s speeches have become. Really this guy is a gaffe machine (which suggests he may shut himself down and ship his gaffe machinery to China).
Let’s not forget as well that Romney is acting like a major hypocrite here too: Mitt Romney is a government sponge as well because he doesn’t really pay any income taxes! He mostly pays capital gains taxes and so he’s really not contributing nearly as much as he could. In fact, the whole Romney family seem to be the government moochers he seems to hate. One could say that Willard, the son of a Mexican immigrant, gives next to nothing to Uncle Sam while his wife pumps out more and more children in the backseat of one of her government subsidized Cadillacs.
The best part of the scandal? The donor hosting the event at which Romney made this disastrous speech is well-known for bacchanals full of escorts and orgies. See? The GOP is trying to both figuratively and literally screw the less fortunate.
