GSA Scandal plagues, bores America

Pity the bureaucrats who work in the General Services Administration. Sure, they probably get insane pensions and 6 weeks paid vacation a year, but it sounds like the dullest federal job there is. Looking after the government’s buildings? Unless it’s the alien holding cells at Area 51 that sounds pretty dull to me.

So it’s only natural then that these semi-comatose pencil pushers went a little nuts at their 2010 meeting in Las Vegas, spending over $800,000 on team building exercises and things like, oh I don’t know, a sushi buffet made out of sushi buffets. Was this money spent wisely? No. Do people deserve to lose their jobs over this? Yes because frankly it sounds like a mercy killing.

Naturally, people from both sides of the political spectrum are pretty upset. But let’s break down the numbers here for a second: In 2010 the U.S. Federal government spent $5.9 trillion. In the grand scene of things, the $800,000 in misspent funds is so tiny that if I paid you $800,000 to find that misappropriated money you still couldn’t do it. Do you know how much money is misspent every year on frivolous things like Wars on Drugs and Corporate Welfare.

And shame on the U.S. media for pretending this isn’t anything but a very small embarassing controversy. I mean, Secret Service agents were just busted for refusing to pay the Colombian hookers they were banging and you want to talk about some lame gaudy conference put on by people who keep track of our government’s lightbulb purchases? I thought you had better instincts, Fox News.

  1. I agree, the amount is small, but it will make 100 other government agencies think twice before organizing some expensive junket. But they’ll probably do it anyway, though.
